The vision of Jean Gritsfeldt
Since the beginning of this year, MBFW has been working together with Jean Gritsfeldt on the realization of his Closing Show. The designer from Kyiv is renown for his multi-layering, eccentric symbiosis of color and texture, bold and original solutions in the cut. Jean Gritsfeldt has been a regular participant at Ukrainian Fashion Week since his debut and was awarded several awards, including the iconic Harper’s Bazaar Fashion Forward Prize.
Due to the war in Ukraine however, the designer is unable to leave the country to attend MBFW Berlin. Given these circumstances, the collection won’t be shipped to Germany either.
Yet it is his express wish to realize this show by all means to make his vision come true and set a sign for peace. An overwhelming number of individuals and organizations shortly started to get together to support him and enable his presentation at MBFW.
The German team of Fashion Revolution, part of the global fashion activism movement, together with over 20 volunteers and donors (such as Textilhafen, Lebenskleidung, Lovjoi, self.made.crew and studio MM04) decided to offer their support. With Jean Gritfeldt’s guidance through video calls from Ukraine, the team started sewing his collection again – piece by piece.
“Today is not the time to talk about fashion, but through fashion. Today, we will not show the new season. We do not show new looks because nobody cares what you wear when you sit in a bomb shelter, a dugout, or a basement. The main thing is to feel warm, comfortable, and protected. Today, we broadcast feelings and sensations.“
“Fashion is not a reflection of today. It always looks to the future for the years ahead. Today, I am using fashion as a tool and weapon, and I am fighting because tomorrow we will be free: For freedom for Ukraine and all people on planet earth. This is my drive and my mission.”
With the support of young Berlin-based designers, Jean Gritsfeldts latest Collection will be presented next week at MBFW Berlin!
